Health officials encourage vaccinations

FLORIDA — With 73% of Floridians over the age of 12 vaccinated against COVID-19, the state has seen a drop in new cases. As of the Oct. 28 report from the Florida Department of Health, statewide, Florida had a 3.0% new case positivity rate.

The rural counties around Lake Okeechobee have also seen new covid case numbers drop, although these areas lag behind in vaccinations. As of the Oct. 28 report:

Glades County had 52% of eligible residents vaccinated and 10 new covid cases for the week. While the county had the highest new case positivity in the state at 14.1%, this was skewed by the low number of people tested.

Hendry County had 59% of eligible residents vaccinated, and 30 new cases for the week. Hendry County’s new case positivity rate was 6.0%.

Martin County had 69% of eligible residents vaccinated and 76 new cases for the week. The county’s new case positivity was 2.8%.

Okeechobee County had 50% of eligible residents vaccinated and 11 new cases for the week. Okeechobee County’s new case positivity was 2.3%.

Palm Beach County had 75% of eligible residents vaccinated and 879 new cases for the week. The county’s new case positivity rate was 3.0%.

As of Oct. 28, Florida had 59,670 covid deaths including:
• Under age 16: 29;
• Ages 30-39: 1,088;
• Ages 40-49: 2,620;
• Ages 50-59: 5,927;

• Ages 60-64: 4,876;
• Ages 65+: 44,718.

Statewide, 1.6% of those who have tested positive for COVID-19 have died from the virus.

Health officials advise vaccinations are the best way to avoid serious illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. Vaccinations are free and widely available through county health departments and pharmacies. For those vaccinated earlier in the year, booster vaccinations are now available for those over age 65, those with health issues that make them more at risk, and those whose jobs make them more at risk for contact with those who may be covid positive.
