Covid new positivity continues to drop in Okeechobee County

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — COVID-19 positivity in Okeechobee County continues to decline according to Bret Smith of the Florida Department of Health in Okeechobee County.

“The numbers are very good,” said Smith. For the period from March 3-10, the county had 302 people tested with just 7 positives for a 2.3% new positivity rate. Smith said one of the seven positives was a breakthrough case of a person who was vaccinated.

He said about 51% of Okeechobee County residents are vaccinated. In the past four weeks, 25 people have received their first covid shot and 76 received their second doses of vaccine. Vaccinations are free and available at most pharmacies.

Smith said the positive cases in those over age 65 are going down. In the past seven days, there were no new covid positives in long term care facilities.

Okeechobee County’s covid positive numbers are now well below the state average, Smith said.

On another issue, Smith said FDOH funding has come through for a generator for the special needs hurricane shelter at Indian River State College. In addition, FDOH will also pay for hurricane shutters for that building. He said the building already has impact resistant windows.
