Football around the lake this week

Posted

COVID-19 caused two teams around the lake last week to miss their game. Clewiston’s game against Wachula scheduled for Sept. 18 had to be canceled after one of the Wachula football players tested positive for the virus. Moore Haven’s game against Lake Placid was postponed after 93 students and 22 teachers were sent home due to COVID-19 exposures.

• Okeechobee Brahmans
The Okeechobee Brahman defense limited John Carroll Catholic’s explosive offense on Sept. 18, but their own offense struggled to move the ball and they fell to the Rams 23-0. Okeechobee will be hosting their first home game of the season this week against the South Fork Bulldogs. It’ll also be senior night at OHS. The Brahmans host the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25.

• Glades Day Gators
The Glades Day Gators battled back and forth through a close first half against The King’s Academy Lions on Sept. 18. In the second half the Lions switched to hurry-up offense and pulled away with a 41-20 win. The Gators host another home game this week against the 0-2 Berean Christian Bulldogs. The Gators and Bulldogs kickoff a 7 p.m. on Sept. 25.

• Clewiston Tigers

The Clewiston Tigers had their game against the Wachula-Hardee Wildcats canceled due to COVID-19, but the silver lining is that it wasn’t due to an exposure with the Tigers. One of the Wildcats players tested positive for the virus and the game was scrubbed in the early hours of Sept. 18. Now after their unexpected bye-week, the Tigers are traveling to face the DeSoto County Dogs at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25.

• Moore Haven Terriers
After three Moore Haven Middle High School students tested positive for COVID-19, 93 other students were sent home along with 22 staff members. Over the weekend the school was deep-cleaned and sanitized. All football and volleyball games at the school are now postponed until further notice. Terriers head coach Brent Burnside expects the quarantine period will be lifted in time for his team’s Oct. 9 game against First Baptist Academy. With three weeks off with no practice, jumping right back into a football game on Oct. 9 will prove difficult for the young Terriers squad.
