FRLS to host migrant outreach event in Immokalee on Dec. 18

FT. MYERS — Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) will be onsite at the Immokalee Flea Market this Saturday, December 18, 1-4 p.m. to offer legal assistance to farmworkers and H2A migrant workers. In addition to hosting a booth at the flea market, volunteers from the area will be taking surveys to learn more about how FRLS can better serve the farmworker community.

Workers and their families are invited to visit the FRLS booth, where attorneys and paralegals will be on hand to discuss health and safety issues in work and home environments. Some of the specific concerns include heat exposure, pesticides and wage theft. FRLS representatives will also be able to communicate in English, Spanish and Creole.

“We are eager to help the farmworkers, but most of them don’t know about us or have fears about seeking our help, said FRLS Attorney and Farmworker Advocacy Director Roberto Cruz. “We’re hoping events like this one will change that.”

FRLS will also provide information about its toll-free Farmworker Hotline, 1-844-44FARMWORKERS (OR 1-844-443-2769), specifically catered to the needs of Florida farmworkers, with a live response team available during extended hours and communication in three languages.

Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. is a non-profit law firm dedicated to providing quality civil legal advice, representation and education for low-income people and communities. In addition to front line services, FRLS provides advice, pro se assistance, legal representation in civil matters as well as community outreach and education and community legal clinics through its seven regional offices throughout Central and South Florida and provides services to farmworkers statewide.
