FWC conducting online survey about Lake O management

TALLAHASSEE — What’s your opinion of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s management of Lake Okeechobee?

If you are an angler, fishing guide, recreational boater, bird watcher, hunter, commercial fisherman, environmentalist or just someone interested in the health of the second largest freshwater lake within the continental United States, FWC wants to hear from you.

Go online to: https://www.research.net/r/okeecho?fbclid=IwAR03LanBZGRsJCknXq_2F7WAERB3syndzbRPczHoOJXR4FUEsIkvSn21j_8
or follow the link from the Lake Okeechobee News Facebook page.

The survey warns that FWC does not manage water levels, discharges to estuaries or water control structures. FWC does, however, oversee the chemical, biological and mechanical control of invasive aquatic plants.

The survey is anonymous.

Questions include topics such as:

• What time of year do you use the lake;
• Which parts of the lake do you use most frequently;
• How you measure the success of the lake management program;
• What vegetation do you prefer to see on the lake;
• To what extent do you support prescribed burns to control invasive plants;
• Which areas of the lake would you like to see targeted for mechanical harvesting;
• Should hydrilla be allowed to come and go or should it be treated with herbicide;
• Do you support or opposing stocking the Caloosahatchee and Kissimmee Rivers with striped bass;
• Do you support or oppose bass tournaments;
• Would you participate in events to remove non-native fish from Lake O?
The survey also provides a space for the participants to add their own comments.
