FWC employee from Hypoluxo killed in WPB boat crash

WEST PALM BEACH — The private biologist employed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission who was killed in a boating accident Tuesday, Oct. 27, on the C-51 Canal has been identified as Dana Katz, 29, of Hypoluxo.

According to a news release from Theresa Barbera, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Ms. Katz was killed when the boat in which she was riding “collided with a concrete piling located underneath the Congress Avenue eastbound ramp onto Southern Boulevard.”

The pilot and another passenger on the vessel, also FWC contracted employees, were reportedly injured, one in stable and the other in serious condition at a Palm Beach County hospital.

The report said: “One of the three occupants was ejected off V-1 (the powerboat) into the water and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The operator was also injured and was transported to the hospital. The other occupant on V-1 died as a result of her injuries.” She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“V-1 was traveling east on the C-51 Canal when it collided with a concrete piling. All three occupants on V-1 are civilian employees with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office will be the lead investigating agency.”

Investigators for the FWC also were present on the scene. The crash happened before 9 a.m. Tuesday.
