Glades board to declare state of emergency before Eta landfall

MOORE HAVEN — Glades County Clerk of Courts Sandra Brown sent out an alert Thursday afternoon stating the Board of County Commissioners will have a special meeting at 9:30 Friday morning, Nov. 6, to call a state of emergency.

Tropical Depression Eta is expected to strengthen over the next 48 to 72 hours and begin affecting South-Central and Southwest Florida as early as Sunday night, Nov. 8, according to the National Weather Service. Tropical storm force-winds of 39-74 mph are expected to affect the region, as well as heavy rain squalls and possible outer-band “training” that dumps excessive rain on concentrated areas for extended periods.

Hurricane Eta made landfall in Nicaragua on Nov. 3 as a category 3 or 4 hurricane, weakened to a tropical storm, then a depression, and was expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mexico and re-form tonight, during the next few days and this weekend.

As of the 1 p.m. Nov. 5 advisory from the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov), Eta is now a tropical depression on the verge of becoming a tropical storm (winds 39-74 mph). The official statement: “The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Depression Eta, located inland over Honduras. Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next five days. — Forecaster Papin/Zelinsky”

However, TV network weather reports Thursday afternoon indicated that hurricane models’ storm tracks were not in agreement about the timing of a curve to the northwest, which could happen over the Keys or anywhere in South or Central Florida up to the Interstate 4 corridor.

Once the storm re-forms, tracks should become more unified and Eta’s ultimate direction will be more clear.
