MOORE HAVEN – A 32-year-old Moore Haven man was arrested Feb. 26, accused of killing his 75-year-old grandfather with a shotgun.

According to the Glades County Sheriff’s Office report, on Feb. 26, at approximately 1:02 a.m., patrol deputies were dispatched to a Palm Avenue residence in reference to a report of shots fired.

Upon their arrival, deputies saw a white male, identified as Ricky Harrell, 32, with his hands up. According to the report Harrell told the deputies “the gun is inside an no one else is here.” The deputies secured Harrell with restraints and entered the residence, where they found Peter Paul Matusiak, 75, on the floor. “It was obvious that Peter died due to a gunshot wound,” the GSSO report states.

Two shotguns were found on the floor near the body.

Glades County detectives and Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) were called to the scene. The detectives conducted an investigation. “Detectives concluded that Peter, who is the grandfather of Ricky, was intoxicated and a verbal argument took place. During the argument, Ricky stated that Peter grabbed the shotgun to which, Ricky then wrestled the shotgun away from Peter. Ricky further told detectives that Peter lunged towards him, and he fired the shotgun, striking Peter,” the report continues.

Harrell then called 911 and met deputies outside his residence.

“It was during the investigation that detectives learned that Ricky has made several comments to friends that he wanted to kill his grandparents,” the report continues.

Harrell was arrested and charged with premeditated first degree murder. He is being held in the Glades County Jail without bond.
