BELLE GLADE- The Glades Day Gators varsity baseball team’s 10-4 record is currently the best in their district.
The Gators got off to a good start this year, winning seven games in a row in the beginning of the season. During that win streak the Gators shutout two teams, beating Moore Haven 18-0 and Sheridan Hills Christian 15-0.
On March 2 the Gators defeated fellow Lake Okeechobee team the Clewiston Tigers 8-4. Freshman Adrian Baeza led Glades Day with three hits and 2 RBIs. Freshman Gray Redish got the win on the mound for the Gators, striking out nine batters in five innings and allowing four hits.
The victory over the Tigers marks head coach Rene Leon’s first win against Clewiston in his seven year stint as a high school baseball coach.
The Gators beat Leon’s former team, the Glades Central Raiders 13-1 on March 6. Junior Blake Barnes led the team in RBIs with 2. Barnes, Baeza, and junior Marquis Clarke each had two hits against the Raiders.
Glade’s Day’s aggressive baserunning left the Raiders frazzled all game. The Gators managed to steal 13 bases on the night, with Blake Barnes, Mason Matos, and Gray Redish all stealing three each.
Now the Gators will face both teams again, this time at home. They play Glades Central at 4 p.m. on April 14, and have a rematch against Clewiston on April 18 at starting at 4 p.m.
