BELLE GLADE – Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County proudly presented the keys to a new home to the Green family in Belle Glade on Monday, Nov. 21.
“I am so happy to finally be a homeowner in my hometown, I want to set an example for the rest of my family and inspire others to pursue homeownership,” said Consuela Green.
Consuela Green was born and raised in Belle Glade and will be sharing her home with her mother, Gearlene Green. Consuela works for the Palm Beach County School district as a custodial supervisor and Gearlene has been retired for over 20 years. They are very excited for the opportunity to purchase their forever home. They are looking forward to having family gatherings in their brand-new house and spending time together.
Earlier this year, a fire destoryed the apartment that Consuela Green and her mother had called home for 20 years. Gearlene Green was inside the residence when the fire started in her bedroom. She was fortunate enough to get out safely but was not able to save any of the family’s belongings.
“This has been a traumatic experience for my family. Words can’t describe the feeling of seeing the place that we have called home for 20 years being destroyed along with all of our possessions. I am so grateful that my mom was not injured and feel even more ready for the next chapter of our lives in a new and safe home,” said Consuela.
Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County partners with families in need to build affordable homes together. Each Habitat partner family is required to invest a minimum of 400 sweat equity hours of their own labor before being eligible to purchase their home utilizing a 30-year, no profit, no interest loan.
