Grinch gives 92 bikes away, with help of local couple

CLEWISTON — With a goal of collecting around 40 donated bicycles for the Grinch to give away to local children, Caleb and Bailey Taylor took on a huge holiday project for their community.

On Dec. 1, Bailey wrote a Facebook update, “As of right now we have four bikes on hand and eight coming in the mail! Thank you, everybody ,for the support. We have set a goal of 40 but welcome as many as we can get. If we can get at least 40 bikes to give out on Christmas morning, Caleb will wear a Grinch costume when gifting them!” She went on, “We still need some families to make this possible. We have a few now but are always looking. If you know of somebody please message or call either of us. All names will be private and discreet. It Takes a Village.”

During the next few weeks, the response from the community was heartwarmingly overwhelming for the sweet, generous couple.

“Ninety-two!!! I repeat, 92 bikes. Thank you to all who has donated! This wouldn’t have been possible without y’all. The Grinch will be dropping bikes off in Moore Haven today and will be in Clewiston tomorrow. Again, thank you all. Merry Christmas,” wrote Caleb Taylor in a Facebook post. “This bicycle drive has been overwhelming at times. Trying to organize and find time to assemble about 50 bikes all while working six days a week for the past month has had me pulling out my hair,” said Caleb. “But let me just say today has made it all worth it. And I couldn’t have done it without the ones who have donated. No matter how you look at it, we all put 92 smiles on 92 kids’ faces on Christmas. Thank y’all so much, I can’t say it enough how much we really appreciated the donations. Merry Christmas and God Bless.”

One young gal said, while sitting on her new bike, “I’m really glad the Grinch changed his mind about what Christmas really means. This is the awesomest bike, too.”

“I think bikes like my new one are too big for Santa’s sled. Maybe, the Grinch and Santa should work together more, they’d be less tired at the end of the night and everyone could get new bikes!” another little boy said.

The project was more than a success. Several more recipients were seen pedaling down the road with smiles as wide as the street itself.
