Helping seniors limit loneliness this holiday season

Posted

WEST PALM BEACH — While the holidays are usually a time for gathering with loved ones, many seniors will continue to isolate themselves throughout the next month in order to prevent exposure to the coronavirus. Although this is undoubtedly the safest option, many of us who care for older adults worry about the mental health effects that seniors are experiencing after months of this isolation.

To spread a bit more holiday cheer this year, local Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) across the state and their provider networks are working together to promote mental health resources and programs for seniors through the Together Apart: Holidays at Heart campaign. Area Agency on Aging Palm Beach/Treasure Coast, in partnership with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA), are ensuring that no senior feels alone during the holiday season.

From November through January, Area Agency on Aging Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Inc., will be reaching out to local seniors in Indian River, Okeechobee, St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties to conduct wellness checks and ensure they are aware of the resources available to them.

Although we provide these services to our seniors year-round, it feels especially important to connect with them during the holidays. We must do our part as a community to protect the physical and mental health of our most vulnerable residents.

Resources offered locally include the agency’s helpline (866-684-5885), which seniors can use for referrals to a variety of different programs provided by the agency.
