Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sept. 15

Posted

INDIANTOWN – Mayor Janet Hernandez proclaimed Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, 2021, Hispanic Heritage Month during the Aug. 19 council meeting. The mayor indicated that five Latin American countries, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, share Sept. 15 as their independence anniversary date. Also, Mexico achieved independence on Sept. 16 and Chile on Sept. 18.

The mayor referenced the U.S. Congress’s adoption of Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988 and praised the rich cultural heritage that Hispanic Americans contribute to the communities where they live. She expressed how the variety of countries, ethnicities and religious traditions have profoundly influenced America.

Hernandez commended their commitment to family, faith, hard work and services that have “enhanced and shaped our national heritage with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their communities.”

Hernandez encouraged all of Indiantown’s residents to join herself and the village council to recognize and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, the U.S. celebrates Spanish-speaking residents’ culture and traditions whose lineages are from Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
