Home security camera helps catch thieves

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee homeowner recently called 911 to tell them he was watching a burglary in progress on his phone through his home surveillance camera. Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy William Jolly, along with several other units, responded to the residence on Thursday, Dec. 17, at approximately 9:15 a.m. While they were en route, the homeowner advised three Hispanic men stole items from his home and then left in a silver Hyundai. The first unit in the area spotted a silver Hyundai and attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the car continued north into Highlands County and was stopped by Highlands County feputies.

The complainant was able to provide video footage of all three suspects from his home surveillance camera and two of the suspects were identified as Bret Corrales and James Wiggs. The probable cause narrative notes, video surveillance clearly shows all three men under the covered porch prying and kicking the back door, trying to gain access. It also shows one man picking up a Yeti cooler and another breaking a bedroom window.

Corrales and Wiggs were charged with unarmed burglary of an unoccupied structure and petit theft. The third man, who was driving the car when it was pulled over, was not arrested. Bonds for Corrales and Wiggs were set at $16,000.
