LABELLE -- A LaBelle developer is coordinating efforts to help victims of Hurricane Ian in Fort Myers with donations of food, water, children’s over-the-counter medications, clothing, mosquito repellent and other nonperishables.
Employees of MJ Newell Homes distributed donations at the Family Dollar Store in Fort Myers Sept. 27 contributed by Miami Dade County and Standard Land Development investors and individual local donors.
Another event is planned for Sunday, Oct. 9, at the same Family Dollar Store located at 4143 Palm Beach Blvd. in Fort Myers from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. which is open to the public.
Real estate Standard Land Development is the parent company of MJ Newell Homes and has locations in Palm Beach, Hendry, Broward, Glades, Collier and Lee counties.
MJ Newell President Michael J. Newell said its investors donated about 60 pallets of bottled water and other necessities to be distributed and Miami-Dade District 11 county council member Christian Cevallos was instrumental in helping collect and deliver donations.
Newell said Standard Land Development offered to help as it has access to heavy equipment that could be used to clear away debris and get donations to Fort Myers.
He found the outpouring of support for the Fort Myers community heartwarming and inspiring, noting that the entire area was completely devastated and water continuing to rise from the Caloosahatchee River.
“People were in tears,” he said, in shock over their losses.
One woman he spoke with told him “I don’t know what to do,” as many had lost all their belongings with some living in their cars as their homes were washed away by Ian.
Seventeen MJ Newell employees participated in distributing donations Sept. 27 and 25 are expected to help out this Sunday.
Newell said donations for nonperishables can be dropped off at its location at 750 E. Cowboy Way in LaBelle during business hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call the office at 239-322-9797.
MJ Newell Homes prides itself on its carefully planned and designed residential housing units in LaBelle and Lehigh Acres, considering income levels of potential homeowners before proposing a housing development in order to ensure the price points are within the economic range of those already living in the area.
