Lady Brahmans battle Lincoln Park Academy

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The Lady Brahman varsity basketball team faced one of the top teams in the state when they hosted Lincoln Park on Dec. 17.

Lincoln Park is ranked as one of the top 10 teams in the state of Florida and is undefeated so far this season.

Still, the Lady Brahmans were also undefeated heading into the game and were confident they could show they could compete with a top program.

Okeechobee won nine straight games to start the 2020 season. A recurring theme throughout most all of Okeechobee’s wins this season has been with a dominating performance in the first quarter by the Lady Brahmans.

In fact, one of the only times the Lady Brahmans didn’t jump out to an early lead was in the season opener against Sebring. That would be the one of the team’s closest games of the season, with the Lady Brahmans battling Sebring all the way to overtime, where they’d go on to take a 41-39 win.

That streak of Lady Brahman dominance in the first quarter was broken by Lincoln Park, who jumped out to an impressive 20-4 lead early. But unlike other teams that have folded when falling behind that much, Okeechobee’s performance in the last half of the game was much better. The Lady Brahmans kept things close throughout the second, third, and fourth quarters, but ultimately fell 66-50.

Juniors Jasmine Shanks and Adryauna Baker led Okeechobee in scoring against Lincoln Park with 14 points each. Sophomore Leta Adamo had a team leading three 3-pointers in the game while Jasmine Shanks led the team with five steals.

The Lincoln Park game should prepare the Lady Brahmans for a slew of tough opponents coming after the Christmas break. Okeechobee will be facing talented programs from Martin County and Jensen Beach in the second half of their season. Martin County is off to a 5-2 start while Jensen is an impressive 7-1.

Jensen Beach is the same team that knocked the Lady Brahmans out of the district championship and out of the regional quarterfinals last year, so there is plenty of history between the two programs.

Okeechobee hosts Martin County at Okeechobee High School on Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
