OKEECHOBEE– The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahmans came back to defeat the Martin County Lady Tigers on Jan. 11, winning 36-29.
Martin County jumped out to an early lead, with Okeechobee trailing 13-10 after one quarter. But late in the first half the Lady Tigers started having trouble hitting their shots. The Lady Brahmans managed to take advantage of that slip-up and took a 19-18 lead with 50 seconds left in the second quarter.
Okeechobee went into halftime leading 21-19 after freshman Hannah Beard managed to steal the ball as Martin County advanced to the Lady Brahman’s side of the court. Hannah turned that turnover into points with a quick layup and the Lady Brahmans didn’t look back.
The win brings Okeechobee’s record to an impressive 10-1 this year, continuing the success the program had last year when they finished 20-7 and advanced to the district championship. The Lady Brahmans single loss came on Dec. 17 against the powerhouse Lincoln Park Academy team. Lincoln Park was undefeated coming into the game against Okeechobee, and had just blown out Port St Lucie 73-7 two games before facing the Lady Brahmans. By comparison to that completely lopsided victory for Lincoln Park, their game against Okeechobee was much more competitive. The Lady Brahmans would go on to fall 66-50.
Okeechobee now has two road games awaiting them later this month. The Lady Brahmans will travel to take on Centennial on Jan. 22 and Fort Pierce Westwood on Jan. 27.
