Late season hurricane threatened holiday decorations

Posted

OKEECHOBEE -- Think deocrating for the holidays is a lot of work at your house?

Okeechobee City employees who erect the giant Christmas tree in the park next to city hall, and the displays around City Hall and in Flagler Park  have put up the decorations, taken them down, and put them up again -- all before  Dec. 1.

At the Nov. 29 tree lighting ceremony, Mayor Dowling Watford explained  city staff started the big job in November on schedule. They were almost finished putting up the decorations when a late season hurricane threatened to put a damper on the holiday spirit. City workers then had to quickly take down the decorations and get them stored safely before Hurricane Nicole blew through the area. Then they put the decorations back up.

The city workers did a great job on the decorations -- twice -- said the mayor.
