SOUTH BAY — Approximately 19 participants competed in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest. It was pre-recorded and presented on Jan. 13, at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored annually by the City of South Bay, Dr. Esther Berry and Rosenwald Elementary School (RES), during the month of January, to honor Dr. King and his legacy.

Mrs. Sandra Lusunariz and Mrs. Karisa Cloutier co-coordinated the event. Students living in the Glades and/or attending Glades area schools participated and videotaped their final speeches to submit.

Here are the four speech categories:
• Grades K-2: Health and Safety were important to Dr. King. “How are you staying safe at school and at home since COVID-19 started?”
• Grades 3-5: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a worker in the community. “How can you help serve your community during the coronavirus crisis?”
• Grades 6-8: History tells us that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an advocate for all people. “What vision do you have for unifying the Glades communities?”
• Grade 9-12: Dr. King evolved and changed the world by participating in peaceful, non-violent marches. Please provide a platform addressing the significant issues impacting today’s society. “What changes will you make to move our country forward in education, health care, the economy, and keeping the COVID-19 pandemic under control?”
