Low-cost spay and neuter program works to control unwanted pet population

Posted

FORT MYERS- The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states "Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats), and that spaying and neutering has helped to control those numbers. In an effort to help, an affordable spay and neuter program is offered monthly by the Gulf Coast Humane Society (GHCS)."

The GCHS low cost spay and neuter program is based in Fort Myers, but is open to residents of Clewiston, Montura, LaBelle, and Immokalee. Pet owners in these areas can schedule an appointment to have their pets picked up, fixed, and vaccinated. GCHS uses their transport van to pick the animals up at a specified location, and brings them back to that location, after surgery, the same day.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), “Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, are euthanized. Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters, helps protect against some serious health problems, and may reduce many of the behavioral problems associated with the mating instinct. Removing a female dog or cat’s ovaries eliminates heat cycles and generally reduces the unwanted behaviors that may lead to owner frustration. Removing the testes from male dogs and cats reduces the breeding instinct, making them less inclined to roam and more content to stay at home.”

The GCHS low cost spay and neuter program makes the sometimes expensive surgeries, affordable. Cats are $15 and Dogs are $35. Each pet will be spayed or neutered, and given a rabies shot. The transport location is scheduled for different times each month, but is always held on a Thursday.

The next available day for this program is May 27, 2021, all pets must be scheduled in advance. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 239-332-1573 or send an email to spayneuterappointments@gulfcoasthumanesociety.org.
