Posted

Jenna McClain, junior weightlifter for LaBelle High School, is not only a 1A State Champion, she was recently named News-Press Female Weightlifter of the Year for the second year in a row. This honor puts her above all other athletes for her sport in Southwest Florida.

This year, due to the precautions in place for COVID-19, the awards show was broadcasted online with famous athletes announcing the award winners. Girls weightlifting was announced by Olympic Champion and four time world champion wrestler, Jordan Burroghs.

Jenna beat out two other athletes from Lee County for the honor of Female Weightlifter of The Year. An unexpected surprise that was announced at the end of the show, McClain was also one of the three female athletes in Southwest Florida to be nominated as Female Athlete of the Year. Even though McClain did not win, it was quite an honor to be nominated.

Other Cowgirl weightlifters that were recognized for All Area News-Press honors were: 1st team: Yesenia Lopez-Gomez and Macy Martinez. Second Team: Janet Villa Rodriguez, and Honorable Mention: Esmeralda Hernandez, Myra Madrid, and Kristy Salgado.

Coach McClain looks forward to an even better 2021 weightlifting season with the Cowgirls!
