Miss American Legion Pageant set for Feb. 11

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The 57th Miss American Legion will be crowned on Feb. 11. The Miss American Legion contest is Okeechobee’s oldest, continuously running community-based pageant, which began in 1965. The pageant is sponsored by the American Legion Post 64.

The current Miss American Legion is Lilly Maxwell, 15, a sophomore at Okeechobee High School. Lilly represented the American Legion in the Labor Day parade and the Christmas parade. She was a speaker at the Veterans Day program in Flagler Park and helped place flags on veterans graves on Memorial Day. She volunteered at the Okeechobee Youth Livestock Show and Sale at the Okeechobee County Fair. Lilly also appeared as guest royalty at several other pageants and appeared in a promotional video for a new Highlands County pageant.

“My favorite part of being Miss American Legion has been proudly representing the veterans and highlighting all the work that Post 64 does for our community," she said. "I wanted to draw attention to the assistance and guidance for veterans, military personel and their families that the American Legion provides, as well as the many local youth activities that the Legion supports. I know that freedom and prosperity come with a price, a price often paid in blood, I wanted to honor our veterans for their service and this was the perfect pageant for that.”

Maxwell is a scholar athlete, a member of the OHS varsity swim team and lacrosse team, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career. She is enrolled in honors classes at OHS as well as dual enrollment courses at Indian River State College. A member of FFA, she will show a Brahma bull and a pig in the Okeechobee Youth Livestock show in March. This summer, Lilly is looking forward to representing Okeechobee as a HOBY Youth Ambassador.
