Monoclonal antibody site opens in Immokalee

Posted

IMMOKALEE- When the pandemic first began, no specific treatment for COVID-19 existed. Since this time, however, the FDA has granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to several monoclonal antibody therapies as a treatment for COVID-19.

Governor Ron DeSantis has been traveling around the state, announcing the openings of monoclonal antibody treatment sites with the goal of offering this therapy to help prevent hospitalizations, reduce viral loads and lessen symptom severity.

The monoclonal antibody therapy can be helpful, but it's not a replacement for vaccination. Medical experts are still asking their communities to continue to step up and get vaccinated to break the virus' chain of transmission.

The state has opened 21 sites, serving more than 13,000 patients. These treatment sites will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and have the capacity to serve more than 300 patients per day.

On Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, DeSantis arrived in Immokalee to announce the opening of a new site located at 1500 Lake Trafford Road.

Monoclonal antibody treatment is available to individuals who:

  • Are high risk for developing severe COVID-19, and
  • Have a positive COVID-19 test and have not yet been admitted to the hospital, and
  • Are 12 years of age or older (and at least 88 pounds).

Post-exposure preventive monoclonal antibodies are available to those who have been exposed (consistent with the CDC's close contact criteria) and who are:

  • High risk for developing severe COVID-19, and
  • 12 years of age or older (and at least 88 pounds), and
  • Not fully vaccinated or vaccinated but immunocompromised.
