GLADES COUNTY – Moore Haven Middle High School students enjoyed their junior/senior prom themed, “An Evening Under the Oaks,” on April 24.

The venue, Arching Oaks Ranch on State Road 80, was donated by Glades County Superintendent of Schools Beth Browning Barfield. The evening included music by a DJ, a photo booth, delicious food and a dessert bar donated by the Glades County School Board.

In an April 1 message shared to social media, Barfield explained how the outdoor prom came about.

“My husband Thomas and I own Arching Oaks Ranch. It is a wedding and special events venue. We have been blessed since 2016 to host hundreds of events, welcoming all that enter the gates. Arching Oaks Ranch was an answer to our families’ prayers, and we honor that blessing by often giving to charities, families, and/or school groups, who want to use the facilities! When I heard that there was not a chance there would be a prom at Moore Haven High School due to the lack of fundraising being canceled (Covid), I did what any person with a heart (and a venue) would do ... I called Samantha Williams Rhymes , Nicole Williams, and Monique Moss and told them what the situation was ... what I could provide... and they said, ‘We’ve got this.. consider it done.’ Why would they do that, You ask? Because caring about the students of MHHS doesn’t just apply to “school hours”, it’s called giving of ones self for the betterment of others. They never wavered in their support or love for the students. They, like me, couldn’t bear the thought of another year of no prom.”

Donations from area businesses and individuals kept the ticket costs down. Some donors also sponsored students who could not afford the $25 ticket price.
