New mission opens to help with immigration

OKEECHOBEE — Nuestro Pueblo Servicios de Immigración is the new “sister” mission to the well-known “Our Village. The primary focus of this new mission is to help with immigration.

Nuestro Pueblo Servicios de Immigración is a non-profit on its own but shares some board members with other non-profits in Okeechobee. Leah Suarez, who started Our Village, is the executive director. Mary O’Neal is the board chair, and Maria Oliverez is the secretary of the board. There are six volunteers who are ready and willing to assist with immigration. All six are bilingual.

Sam Byrd, has been involved in immigration for many years and although he is now retired and living in Alva, he is excited to volunteer some time helping the group get set up and trained.

Oliverez explained Our Village has clients who desperately need help with immigration papers and laws. Many are told the process costs thousands and thousands, but most of the work for immigration involves paperwork, and with help from those trained, it can be done much, much cheaper than this. There are some filing fees and there are some court costs, but for most of the process, you do not need an attorney. You just need someone who is familiar with the paperwork.

Suarez said their goal is to help immigrants achieve citizenship and work towards a better life. Just like with Our Village, Nuestro Pueblo Servicios de Immigración offers a hand up, not a hand out.
