BUCKHEAD RIDGE -- There were 37 in attendance for the meeting of the Buckhead Ridge Community Association (BRCA on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Several new residents to Buckhead came to the meeting which featured a potluck dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by an informational meeting with news for this tight community. The BRCA welcomed newcomers Bill Ogelsby, Richard Baylor and Maurine Lee.

A report from the Mosquito Control Board said they are looking at and discussing the possible purchase of a harvester to work the Buckhead Canals. This would help alleviate the buildup of vegetation without the use of herbicides. While it would be a sizeable investment, its cost could possibly could be shared with other communities in Glades County.

The concern of a half submerged large boat in one of the canals was brought up at the meeting. Commissioner Tim Stanley said the county is looking for a way to get it removed.

There will be a return of the Catfish Festival to BHR on Jan. 22. Phil Eddings will provide the music, many vendors will participate - spaces available for others at a cost of only $25. A big catfish dinner will be available for only $8. To participate, contact Vickie Anderson at 863-634-4106.

Commissioner Stanley reported that the sidewalk construction along State Road 78 will begin this June. Also beginning soon will be the paving of Lake Drive West. The frequent speeding and accidents on S.R. 78 are going to be addressed with ticket writing. A sad report on Commissioner Donna Long said she has lung cancer and is currently receiving chemo treatments five days a week for eight weeks.

These meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month in the building behind the fire station. A meeting of the BHR Mosquito Control board is open to all concerned just prior to the Community Association meeting.
