OCFR fights fire on the Prairie

Posted

OKEECHOBEE -- On April 9 at approximately 2:15 p.m., Okeechobee County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a brush fire on the Prairie on 244th Street. Initial reports estimated the fire at about 1/4 acre, but when the crews arrived, they found approximately 20 acres burning, and by the time they were able to get it under control, the fire had burned approximately  35 acres.

Due to the red flag fire conditions, multiple units were dispatched to the area including the Florida Forest Service who cut a perimeter around the fire. Multiple spot fires began on the east side of Northwest 200th Avenue, but the crews were able to completely extinguish them.

Once the fire was under control, a wet line was put around the perimeter, all spot fires were extinguished and left cold.
