OKEECHOBEE — In a meeting that might have set a record for time, on Sept. 24 the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners approved the property tax rate for the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

The public hearing on the tax millage opened at 5:01 p.m. and was finished just four minutes later.

The commissioners approved the county tax millage of 8.0 mills. One mill equals $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of taxable property value.

The 2019 millage rate was also 8.0 mills.

The approved millage was below the rollback rate of 8.4991 mills. The rollback is the millage that would be required to finance the previous year’s budget based on the new year’s property appraisals. If property values increase, the rollback rate may be lower than the previous year’s millage rate. If property values decrease, the rollback rate may be higher than the previous year’s millage rate.
