Okeechobee Fire Report

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 15 medical/EMS, 10 motor vehicle and one false alarm call between Nov. 2 and Nov. 8.

• Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 112 medical/EMS, six motor vehicle, three aircraft standby, seven dispatch and canceled, one fire related, three power line down, and 14 miscellaneous calls last week. Of 92 possible transports, eight were refused.

• On Nov. 5, OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire at approximately 10:15 p.m. in the 4700 block of U.S. 441 Southeast. The call turned out to be a malicious, mischievous, false call.

• On Nov. 6, OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire at approximately 9 a.m. in the 9600 block of State Road 70 East. While en route, they were advised the fire had been extinguished. When they arrived, they found a small passenger car with the hood up. A bystander wearing a fire rescue shirt from another agency told them he had disconnected the battery prior to their arrival. The fire appeared to have been in the engine compartment. The owner said she had been having some car problems in recent weeks. No hot spots were found.

• On Nov. 7, OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire at approximately 1:45 p.m. on State Road 78 West. When they arrived, they found a couple on a boat who admitted lighting a fire to stay warm. They were asked to put the fire out and complied.

• On Nov. 7, OCFR responded to a call regarding a burn issue at approximately 3 p.m. When they arrived, they checked out a washing machine and found no heat or burned area but smelled melted electrical wires and advised homeowner to keep unit unplugged until it could be checked by electrician on Monday.

• On Nov. 8, OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire at approximately 9:45 a.m. in the 2800 block of Northwest 20th Trail. Halligan was used to force open corners of the hood, and a reciprocating saw was used to cut the hood latch to gain access to the engine compartment. The owner of the vehicle said she caught a strange odor as she began to park and then noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The fire marshal was notified.

• On Nov. 8, OCFR responded to a call regarding a power line down at approximately 9 p.m. in the 32800 block of U.S. 441 North. When they arrived, they found the neutral line down. A tree had fallen on the neutral and the positive lines, catching on fire. The fire was extinguished.
