Okeechobee Fire Report

Okeechobee Firefighters responded to the following calls last week:

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 21 medical/EMS, one fire related, three motor vehicle accidents and three canceled calls between March 29 and April 4.

• Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 137 medical/EMS, eight fire related, Nine motor vehicle, five aircraft standby, five canceled and seven miscellaneous calls last week. Of 107 possible transports, eight were refused.

• On April 4 at approximately 9 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding unauthorized burning on Northeast 38th Terrace. When they arrived, they found a small, smoldering fire. They told the owner he could not burn the items he had on the fire and told him they had received complaints about the smoke. The owner extinguished the fire.

•  On April 4 at approximately 4 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire on Northwest 266th Street. When they arrived, they found approximately a tenth of an acre burned. A local resident had used a bulldozer to establish a plow line around the fire and the fire was out prior to the arrival of OCFR. They remained on the scene until the arrival of the department of forestry.

•  On April 3 at approximately 4 p.m., OCFR responded to a complaint about a yard debris fire on Northwest 242nd Street. When they arrived, they found a yard debris fire and advised the owner of the laws pertaining to burning. He was asked to put out the fire and complied.

•  On April 2 at approximately 6:45 p.m., OCFR and OCFD responded to a call regarding a building fire on Northwest 45th Terrace. When they arrived, they found heavy fire with 100% involvement. The fire was extinguished, and the fire marshal was notified. The fire is under investigation at this time.

•  On April 1 at approximately 11:30 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire on Northeast 224th Street. When they arrived, they found the vehicle on the side of the road, fully involved in flames. The owner told them he had just had some repair work done at a local shop and was pulling a trailer down the road when he noticed smoke coming from the air vents and the truck lost power. He jumped out and grabbed a fire extinguisher to try to put out the fire. Another motorist stopped to help but they could not put out the fire. They unhooked the trailer and used a chain to pull the truck away from the trailer. No one was injured. The state fire marshal was notified.

• On March 29 at approximately 7 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a burn issue on Southeast 91st Trail. When they arrived, they found a small smoldering fire in a burn pit. They attempted to make contact with the owners, but no one was home. They extinguished the fire.
