Okeechobee Fire Report

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 15 medical/EMS, three fire related, eight motor vehicle accidents, one public assist and one canceled call between May 17 and May 23.

• Okeechobee County Fire Department responded to 106 medical/EMS, 11 fire related, three aircraft standbys, 12 motor vehicle accidents, five dispatch and cancel and seven miscellaneous calls last week. Of 88 possible transports, nine were refused.

• On May 21 at approximately 9 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire in the 4000 block of U.S. 441 Northeast. When they arrived, they found the vehicle fully involved. The driver said she was driving at a normal speed when she smelled smoke coming from the vehicle. She pulled over and then saw flames coming from the engine compartment and called 911.

• On May 23 at approximately 2:45 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a grass fire in the 12000 block of Northwest 160th Street. When they arrived, they found approximately .1 acre burning with three debris piles located within the perimeter of the fire. The man on the scene told them he started the burn piles but could not contain them.

• On May 23 at approximately 5:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a rubbish fire in the 7500 block of Northeast 342nd Trail. They cleared the scene approximately an hour later.

• On May 23 at approximately 5 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire in the 1300 block of Southwest 24th Avenue. When they arrived, they found a Dodge pickup truck approximately 70% involved with fire. The owner said he was driving normally when the vehicle began to smell hot and then he saw flames coming from under the truck. He stopped, exited the vehicle;e and called 911.

• On May 23 at approximately 10:45 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a rubbish fire in the 2300 block on Northeast 138th Street. When they arrived, they found a pile of trash on the shoulder of the road and believed it to be intentionally ignited. They requested a deputy patrol the area to prevent further incidents.

• On May 21 at approximately 4:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 14400 block of Northwest 286th Street. When they arrived, they found a 3 acre fire involving grass and brush. The fire was contained at 5 acres. The cause of the fire was determined to be an unattended debris pile.

* On May 26 at approximatley 3 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a structure fire in the 11500 block of U.S. 441 Southeast, Big Water RV Park.  While en route, they were advised there was an exposer to the East, and it was receiving heat damage.  The fire was extinguished and the state fire marshal was notified.
