Okeechobee Fire Report

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 21 EMS/medical, three motor vehicle accident, two police assist, one helicopter standby, and false alarm and three canceled calls between May 24 and Mat 30.

• Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 158 EMS/medical, 19 motor vehicle accident, 13 fire related, six aircraft standby, eight canceled and 17 miscellaneous calls last week. Of 127 possible transports, 10 were refused.

• On May 25 at approximately 2:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding unauthorized burning in the 8400 block of U.S. 441 Southeast. When they arrived, they found the resident burning garbage and told him regulations allow burning of yard waste only.

• On May 26 at approximately 7:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire on Northwest 260th Street. When they arrived, they found an area approximately 1/8 of an acre smoldering. The fire was extinguished and cleared the site.

• On May 26 at approximately 5:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a natural vegetation fire in the 7400 block of Northwest 86th Court. When they arrived, they found a fire started by an ember from an unattended burn pile. The fire was extinguished, and the team cleared the site.

• On May 27 at approximately 6 p.m., OCFR responded to a call in regards to a brush fire in the 14600 block of Northwest 304th Street. When they arrived, they found approximately 20 acres on fire in an open field. They kept the fire under control until the arrival of the Forest Service who laid down plow lines around the perimeter of the fire. Once the fire was under control and mop up was complete, all units cleared the scene.

• On May 28 at approximately 1 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a gasoline spill in the 2900 block of Southeast 33rd Terrace. When they arrived, they found a 2’x8’ area of diesel fuel on the roadway. They placed Oil Dry over it and then swept it up. The occupant of the nearby mobile home told them a fuel tank fell out of a truck and hit her car causing minor damage to the vehicle. She said the truck came back with a skid steer, loaded up the damaged tank and left. Deputies responded to the location and following the trail of fuel, were able to locate the tank.

• On May 28 at approximately 6:15 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 14600 block of Northwest 304th Street. When they arrived, they found a small spot smoldering near the plow line established othe evening before. All other fire was well within the burn area. The spot was extinguished.

• On May 28 at approximately 9:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a structure fire in the 3600 block of Southeast 136th Avenue. When they arrived, they found a wooden playground set on fire behind a home. The owner said he had no idea how the fire started.

• On May 28 at approximately 8:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 3800 block of State Road 710 Southeast. When they arrived, they found a small brush fire in a heavily wooded area. Access was made using the brush truck and the fire was extinguished. The Forest Service responded to the scene as well.

• On May 28 at approximately 7:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding unauthorized burning in the 15900 block of Northwest 286th Street. When they arrived, they found four piles of yard debris burning. Burn laws were explained to the owner, and the fire was extinguished.

• On May 29 at approximately 7:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a building fire on Northeast 31st Way. When they arrived, they found a small shed at the rear of the property smoldering. The owner was using a hose to extinguish the fire. The homeowner explained he was attempting to cremate his cat in a small burn pit next to the shed when the shed caught on fire.

• On May 30 at approximately 1 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 11200 block of Northeast Third Circle. When they arrived, they found approximately half an acre of brush and grass involved. The Forest Service was on the scene with a brush truck and two tractor plows. They established plow lines around the perimeter and extinguished the fire.
