Okeechobee Fire Report

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 14 medical/EMS, three motor vehicle, three false alarms and four canceled calls between June 7 and June 13.

• Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 128 medical/EMS, seven motor vehicle, seven fire related, one aircraft standby and 12 miscellaneous calls last week. Of 101 possible transports, six were refused.

• On June 4 at approximately 10:15 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding smoke in the 2800 block of Northwest 46th Avenue. When they arrived, they found a small contained fire of natural vegetation. The resident was supervising the fire and was within the burn law parameters. The neighbor who complained was under the misconception that there was a burn ban.


• On June 5 at approximately 9:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire on U.S. 441 North. Osceola County Fire Department also responded.


• On June 7 at approximately 11:15 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a structure fire in the 11500 block of U.S. 441 Southeast. When they arrived, they found all occupants out of the home. They were told sparks had come from behind the television. They found no fire, sparks or smoke, turned off power to the home and advised they get an electrician to check out the wiring before turning the power back on.


• On June 10 at approximately 4:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 15800 block of Northwest 296th Street. When they arrived, they found a slow burning, one acre grass fire. The head fire was already into a flag pond, and they were unable to access it but began working on the flanks. Florida Forest Service arrived with another brush truck and plow, and the plow was able to contain the head fire. A back burn was used to finish burning out the pond.


• On June 10 at approximately noon, OCFR responded to a call regarding a grass fire in the 6200 block of U.S. 441 Southeast. When they arrived, they found several small burned areas in the grass on the shoulder of the road. Bystanders told them a bird fell from a power line with a fish in its mouth. They said the bird and fish started the fire and it was extinguished by bystanders.


• On June 10 at approximately 10:15 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a power line down in the 3200 block of Northwest 160th Street. When they arrived, they found a smoking power pole with a dead buzzard at the base. The power company arrived and secured the equipment.
