Okeechobee’s COVID-19 deaths total 105

About 1.5% of coved-positive cases result in death

OKEECHOBEE – Since the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) shut down the online COVID-19 dashboard, only statewide data was released on a weekly basis. This left Okeechobee County residents wondering just how many of the state deaths were in Okeechobee County. FDOH referred media inquiries to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website, which does provide some weekly information by county, but it is not very helpful for those who live in rural areas. Okeechobee County’s covid deaths for the week have been listed as “less than 10.”

According to information provided by a reliable confidential source who has access to the information, as of Sept. 23, Okeechobee County’s COVID-19 death toll was at 105. That puts Okeechobee County covid deaths right at the state average, which is 1.5% of the county’s 7,078 covid-positive cases to date.

FDOH has advised it make take days or even weeks for a covid death to be added to the data base. Some deaths added to the total recently may have occurred earlier in the pandemic. Some more recent deaths may not yet be in the total.

Vaccines became available in Okeechobee County in January. Since Jan. 20, three persons who had been at least partially vaccinated have died from COVID-19, the source revealed.

About half of Okeechobee County’s covid deaths occurred before vaccines were available.

When approving the vaccines for emergency use, the FDA advised that vaccines are not 100% effective, but they do offer the best chance of surviving a covid infection. The FDA also warned the effectiveness of the vaccine may be limited by other medications. (If you want to know if the vaccine worked, your doctor can order a blood test to find out if your body is producing antibodies that will protect you.)

Some numbers to consider:

• 1.5% of Okeechobee County residents who tested positive have died from the virus. So if 200 people test positive in a week, it is stasitically likely three of those people will die.

• 0.24% of Okeechobee County’s total population has died from the virus.

• 0.0428% of Okeechobee County residents who were at least partially vaccinated have died.

According to the CDC, since Jan. 1, 2020, deaths from all causes in Okechobee County totalled 830.  That means COVID-19 was related to  about 13% of all Okeechobee County deaths since Jan. 1, 2020.
