BASINGER — Everyone is invited to a Picnic & Family Fun Day at the historic Pearce Homestead at Fort Basinger, Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. -3 p.m. This is a special event by the Heritage Association of Highlands County with activities for the whole family. No admission or parking fees.
Bring a picnic lunch, blanket and lawn chairs and spend the day. Food will also be available for purchase; sandwiches, ice cream and drinks.
The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) from Highlands and Okeechobee will attend in costume beginning with a flag salute at noon followed by musket firing.
At 1 p.m., local fire departments will participate in a Tug of War contest. Activities for kids include a sack race, egg relay and bounce house and tours of the furnished home.
For kids and adults, the Highlands County 4-H will host a Cake Baking Contest at the schoolhouse. The deadline for entering is September 23. No charge to enter. The contest is open to youth ages 5-16 and adult amateur bakers. Contestants must register on line. The website is: ufl.pacecommunity.net/Event/ViewEventProfile?eventid=21490. Folks can enjoy the grounds with ancient oak trees and plants and walk to the dock and view the famous Kissimmee River close-up when at one time, paddlewheel steamboats and ferries were a common site.
From Okeechobee take U.S 98 to Fort Basinger. Cross the Kissimmee River Bridge and turn left onto S.R. 721 to 70 Boondock Road a very short distance.
