Public encouraged to contact legislators about vaccine supply

OKEECHOBEE – Okeechobee County officials are as frustrated as their constituents about the difficulties local residents are encountering when trying to make an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccination.

On Jan. 12, Okeechobee County Commission Chair Terry Burroughs took to social media to encourage residents to call their state representative and senator.

“The county commission continues to receive complaints from our residents regarding setting appointments for COVID-19 vaccine. We understand your frustration, however, the State Department of Health is in control of this situation,” Burroughs explained. “If you are having difficulties in obtaining a reservation for vaccination at the Health Department, you need to reach out to your State Representative Kaylee Tuck at 863-462-5019 or your State Senator Ben Albritton at 863-534-0073. Please call and let them know what you are experiencing in our county.”

The Florida Department of Health in Okeechobee County did not make any vaccination appointments this week because they did not receive a vaccine shipment this week. Appointments for vaccinations conducted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday had been made last week.

According to the Florida Department of Health, as of the report updated at 12:05 a.m. on Jan. 12, 850 persons had been vaccinated in Okeechobee County with their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and three had their second dose.

Burroughs stated he has been in contact with the governor’s office “seeking support on resolving the issues our residents experienced in hopes to making it a better experience for all.”
