Referendum benefitting Hendry County schools to appear on November ballot

Posted

LABELLE — A half-cent sales surtax referendum will be included in the November 2022 ballot. This referendum is designed to fund much-needed improvements throughout the Hendry County School District with all funds remaining within the county.

If passed, the tax would be applied to select goods and services sold throughout the county, however, the tax would not be applied to groceries, gasoline, or prescription medication.

More than 7,000 students attend Hendry County schools and will benefit from the funds if the referendum passes in November.

If passed, the Hendry County School District plans to renovate schools or construct new ones to allow growth and keep up with the expanding population. New technology and security will also be funded, along with the lease or purchase of school buses.

A half-cent surtax will have little impact on residents. For example, it would only add two cents to the cost of a Happy Meal®, or twenty-four cents to the cost of a sheet of plywood. But the impact on students would be felt in generations to come.

“As a generational resident of Hendry County, I know first-hand the impact our local school system has on our students’ futures,” stated Superintendent of the Hendry County School District, Michael Swindle. “And, as a parent of a child in the Hendry County school system, I can see the need for funding. I encourage the residents of Hendry County to educate themselves on the surtax, and to decide what is best for their families and our community.”
