Rosenwald announces winners of the 37th annual MLK Oratorical Contest

Posted

SOUTH BAY — Approximately 29 participants competed in the annual 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest hosted by Rosenwald Elementary School on Jan. 12. Roughly 150 people attended this historical program to honor the legacy of Dr. King, as on-campus audience attendance was limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was “Live” streamed via Google Meet, posted on Facebook and the school district’s website. Sponsors for the event included the City of South Bay, Dr. Esther E. Berry and Rosenwald Elementary School.

Entertainment was provided by the I.O.C.G. Youth Ministries and the fabulous Rosenwald Elementary School’s Drumline students. Marsha Andrews, Palm Beach County School Board Member shared remarkable comments regarding the amazing speeches and pride of the Glades participants. The MLK judges included Dr. Esther E. Berry, Benita Hamilton, Jacqueline Radcliff and Sharon Singleton.

Students from five Glades area schools participated. The topics for speeches were divided into four categories:

• Grades K-2: What does Dr. King’s message of Love and “I Have a Dream” mean to you?”
• Grades 3-5: Explain how diversity in the Glades influences your sense of belonging.
• Grades 6-8: Based on your experience, how does virtual learning impact equality and equity in education?
• Grades 9-12: During the COVID pandemic we are trying to navigate a “new normal.” In what ways have the new protocol changes, such as virtual schooling, facemasks, COVID vaccinations, and social distancing affected your life?
