Okeechobee Commissioner Terry Burroughs elected to lead Florida’s Small County Coalition

OKEECHOBEE — Okeechobee Commissioner Terry Burroughs has been elected to serve as Chair of Florida’s Small County Coalition, a position responsible for overseeing the activities of the 39 county members of the Small County Coalition. Burroughs was elected to the position by his commissioner colleagues attending the annual meeting of the Small County Coalition in Orlando.

In other action, Hardee County Commissioner Russell Melendy was elected to serve as Vice-Chair of the Coalition and Washington County Commissioner Tray Hawkins was elected to serve as the Coalition Secretary. The election was held during the annual business meeting of the Small County Coalition in Orlando on June 30. Coalition officer terms will run through June of 2022. Levy County Commissioner John Meeks – served two one-year terms as Chair of the Coalition from 2019-2021 and will remain in the Coalition leadership as the past-chair.

Established in 1992, the Small County Coalition is a statewide alliance of 39 county commissions from small and rural counties with a population smaller than 150,000. The Small County Coalition’s primary mission is to help Florida’s small and rural counties address legislative issues from a small county/rural perspective and work effectively with state agencies leadership. There are 15 Senate Districts and 24 House Districts that include all or a portion of a small county.

“It is an honor to be elected to Chair the Small County Coalition," said Burroughs. "I will work with my colleagues from around the State to increase support for the needs of Florida’s small and rural counties. The Small County Coalition is a very important organization for small counties, and I look forward to working on the issues that are important to coalition members - jobs, transportation, water, agriculture, health care, and environmental stewardship.”

“Commissioners Burroughs, Melendy, and Hawkins have all demonstrated strong leadership in serving their communities as life-long Floridians,” said immediate past Chair- Levy Commissioner John Meeks. “Each of these commissioners have extensive experience working with local, regional, and state organizations. They will make a great team working on small county issues at the state level.”

Other Actions
• Commissioners Ricky Jones (Franklin County), Danny Glidewell (Walton County), Ronnie Moore (Madison County), were elected to serve on the Coalition’s Executive committee.

• Commissioners Chris Dougherty (Bradford County), Anthony Adams (Lafayette County) and Kelly Owens (Okeechobee County) were re-elected to positions on the Coalition Executive Committee.
• Commissioners Scott Carnahan (Citrus), Larry Harvey (Putnam), and Donald O’Brien (Flagler) were appointed by Commissioner Burroughs to serve 1 year terms as Chair appointments to the Executive Committee.
