Students First - IHS success story

Posted

IMMOKALEE - Friday, May 28, is Graduation Day for Collier County Public Schools (CCPS)! As we get ready to celebrate the Class of 2021, we’ll take a moment to share just one success story with you—this one from Jean Colas at Immokalee High School (IHS).

Growing up, Jean Colas faced many struggles. Speaking Haitian Creole at home and only English in school presented numerous difficulties that left him feeling unmotivated. Thanks to his father for showing him the importance of working hard for a successful future, Colas made a promise to take advantage of every available opportunity presented to him.

In sixth grade, Colas kept that promise by learning to play the trombone from watching online videos. He continued to foster his love of music, and during his sophomore year at IHS, he auditioned and was accepted into the CCPS Honors Band.

A student who once had challenges excelling in reading, Colas now composes music to relieve stress. During his high school career, he also enjoyed taking part in Key Club and Beta Club and became an Academic Advisor.

Following graduation, Colas will be traveling to Notre Dame University to major in Biochemistry and pursue a pre-med track. He is working towards becoming a physician and researching to find a cure for sickle cell anemia.

We wish all our graduates a promising and successful future, whatever path they choose. Congratulations to the Class of 2021!
