Take a stand on Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence Day

Posted

A group of Collier County men will “walk the walk” Tuesday, March 8, on Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence® Day, as part of the Take A Stand initiative. On that afternoon, men will canvas various neighborhoods in our community, distributing educational door hangers with information on domestic violence.

“Domestic Violence is not just a woman’s issue,” said Dan Bennewitz, Take A Stand chairman. “Nationally, over 80 percent of domestic violence is perpetrated by men. It’s up to men to speak out and stand as equal partners with women to stop domestic violence and human trafficking.”

Earlier in the day, Collier County Commissioners will proclaim Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence® Day. GADV was formed in 2008 by a group of like-minded men as an initiative of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. Since its formation, the mission of GADV is to support Shelter services, educate the community and create social change.

Take A Stand is being coordinated in partnership with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Naples Police Department, and the State Attorney’s Office. Teams will be made up of law enforcement, GADV members, Shelter staff and volunteers.

“We are especially proud of these men because when it comes to domestic violence, they are truly ‘walking the walk,’” said Shelter CEO Linda Oberhaus. “We hope their willingness to be a visual presence will be an inspiration to other men in our community.”
