Tampa man killed in Glades County crash

Driver runs through stop sign on SR 78 at US 27

GLADES COUNTY – A 58-year-old Tampa man was killed in a three vehicle accident at the intersection of State Road 78 and U.S. 27 on May 5, at 12:42 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the FHP report, a van driven by a 27-year-old West Palm Beach man was traveling south on State Road 78, approaching the intersection with US-27. There were no passengers in the van.

A pickup truck, driven by a 55-year-old Lake Placid man was traveling west on US 27, approaching the intersection with State Road 78. There were three female passengers in the pickup truck. The FHP report did not include their ages or places of residence.

A sedan, driven by a 47-year-old Tampa woman was also traveling west on US-27, behind the pickup truck. A 58-year-old Tampa man was a passenger in the sedan.

According to the FHP report, the van driver failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the highway directly in the path of pickup truck. As a result, the front of the pickup truck collided with the rear left of the van. The van then rotated into the path of the sedan. The front of the sedan collided with the front of the van.

The van then overturned and came to rest on the paved median of US-27. The driver of the van received minor injuries, according to the FHP report.

The sedan also came to rest on the median of US 27. The 58-year-old male passenger in the sedan was fatally injured in the crash. The sedan driver received minor injuries according to the FHP report.

The pickup truck came to rest on the outside lane of US-27. The driver of the pickup truck received minor injuries. The three female passengers in the pickup received none to minor injuries, the FHP report states.

The crash remains under investigation.
