Tigers knock out Eagles in heavyweight fight

CLEWISTON- The Clewiston Tigers and Calvary Christian Eagles went head-to-head in a back and forth heavy weight fight at Cane Field on Sept. 17.

After trading blows in the first half, the Tigers pulled away in the second half on the back of some big plays from their offense to win 38-23.

It was Clewiston’s first game back after two weeks off, and some of that rust showed on their first drive on offense. On their second play on the opening drive a false start put the Tigers in a second and 15 which stalled momentum.

Their second drive started with a bang with a great slant pass from senior Zomarion Harper to junior Kenari Wilcher for 30 plus yards. A face mask penalty on the Eagles on the tackle tacked on even more yards. Former Moore Haven Terrier Johnny Crawford III exploded through the Calvary Christian defense a few plays later for a 30-yard touchdown to put Clewiston up 7-0. Crawford would go on to have nearly 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

The Eagles responded with a long, scoring drive of their own, most of it coming on the ground. And tied the game up 7-7. Clewiston would go on to take a 21-7 lead in the middle of the second quarter. But the Eagles would slowly work their way back into the game. Midway through the third quarter the Tigers lead by only one point, 24-23.

The last time these two teams met in 2020, both were coming into the game undefeated. Calvary Christian managed to come away with a 26-21 victory in a heartbreaker for the Tigers. But this year, the Tigers had a boost under center with former Glades Central Raider Zomarion Harper. Harper transferred to Clewiston in his senior year, and looks to be the final piece the Tigers needed to put together a postseason run. Zomarion throws the ball hard and accurate and will be a weapon for Clewiston as the season progresses.

Late in the game, with Clewiston leading by one score, the Tigers needed a big play to break Calvary Christian’s hope for a comeback. Right on cue, Zomarion hit junior Chauncy Cobb on an absolute laser for a 60-yard touchdown. Calvary Christian had good coverage on the play, but Zomarion placed the ball perfectly in the hands of Cobb, who caught it without breaking stride and waltzed into the endzone to make it 38-23.

The Tigers are now 2-0. The bad news? After missing the last two weeks due to games being canceled, the Tigers are now off another week. Clewiston coaches are looking for an opponent to schedule on Sept 24, but for now the Tiger’s next game is Oct. 1 when they travel to Avon Park.
