OKEECHOBEE — A conspiracy to bring illegal drugs into the county jail was thwarted this week. On March 3, John David Brighton, 26, and Brittney Drawdy, 30, were each charged with introducing contraband into a detention facility.

On Wednesday, a detective from the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force received notice that a package had arrived at the jail addressed to Brighton. The detective was in the midst of an investigation regarding a conspiracy between Brighton and Drawdy to smuggle illegal contraband into the jail using the United States Postal Service.

The package was a single white envelope containing three pieces of 8.5x11 inch paper. Two of the papers had writing on them, and the third was blank. Upon inspection, the detective found a waxy film covering most of the papers with writing on them. A field test confirmed the paper was positive for synthetic cannabinoids.

According to the arrest report, the plot was uncovered when Brighton and Drawdy discussed it during phone and video calls which are monitored.

Drawdy, who was arrested on March 2 on charges of sale of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking in synthetic cannabinoids and possession with intent to sell, was charged with introducing contraband into a detention facility and possession with intent to sell synthetic cannabinoids. Her total bond for all charges was set at $191,000.

Brighton, who was also in jail on unrelated charges was charged with introducing contraband into a detention facility. His bond was set at $15,000.
