TikTok trend deemed dangerous and potentially deadly

Posted

A recent TikTok Trend is dangerous and could be fatal, according to health officials.

The “Borax Train” challenge involves adding borax – a cleaning agent --  to drinking water.

The National Institutes of Health advise ingestion of borax can cause stomach irritation, nausea, diarrhea, and convulsions.

The 20 Mule Team™ Borax website explains “Borax is a naturally occurring compound that is found in arid regions similar to salt plains in Utah or Nevada. The mineral itself is made up of Sodium, Oxygen and Boron to create Sodium Tetraborate and is mined in Central and Southern California. 20 Mule Team™ simply refines the raw Borax that is mined from the ground and converts it to a powder for your easy use.

The 20 Mule Team™ Borax website advises consumers their product is NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION: "Do not take internally. If ingested, rinse mouth with a large full glass of milk or water. Do not induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately."

Boric acid – a pesticide used to kill cockroaches – is also toxic to humans.

Confusion over research into the health benefits of boron may have inspired the dangerous TikTok Trend.

According to the National Institutes of Health, boron is a trace element that is naturally present in many foods such as fruits and legumes. Wine, cider and beer all contain boron.
