CLEWISTON — Children from across the Clewiston community and their families made a splash at the grand re-opening of the C.S. Mott Community Pool, 113 W Osceola Ave., on June 15. The aging pool was closed to make the necessary upgrades and conform with Florida’s swimming pool codes.
Thanks to assistance from the people of U.S. Sugar, the pool has now been completely renovated. After a countdown from the crowd of around 200 hundred people, kids, and a fully clothed Clewiston Director of Operations Danny Williams performed their best cannonball into the clear, cool water.
“Our founder Charles Stewart Mott always said, ‘what’s good for our community is good for our company’,” said Brannan Thomas, Community Relations Director for U.S. Sugar. “This community pool that bears his great name is now re-opened for all members of our community to enjoy.”
For the last two months, workers have been refurbishing the area with new features including a diving board and slide, an upgraded filtration and purification system, and an advanced lightning detection system for up to 40 miles away. The new pool holds 50 people.
“Community Partnerships have always been a way for our city to thrive. The city commissioners and I are grateful for the generosity of the employees of U.S. Sugar, who are always willing to get involved,” Clewiston Mayor Jimmy Pittman. “I’m thrilled the local kids are going to have a great summer at the pool.”
Additionally, Hendry Regional Medical Center donated a basket of lifesaving first aid supplies including pediatric and adult CPR masks.
The pool originally opened in 1950 and is currently the oldest municipal pool operating in Florida. The pool was named after Charles Stewart Mott, who founded U.S. Sugar in 1931.
The pool will be open 7 days a week and there will always be three lifeguards on duty. Swimming for the day costs $5. However, today everyone got in for free.
Outside of the pool, kids and their families enjoyed snow cones, sidewalk chalk, and arts and crafts.
