CLEWISTON — Congratulations to Ms. Jasmine Hurtado of Clewiston High School, the winner of the 2024 Sugar Festival and Incubate Debate Essay Contest!
The contest, announced in January by Incubate Debate and Sugar Festival, was open to middle and high school students from Hendry and Glades counties to explore “How has sugar shaped your community?”
Essays were encouraged to be creative and impactful, and Jasmine did an exceptional job with the help of her English teacher, Jenard Simillien, who’s now had his students win two years in a row! For their exceptional work, both Jasmine and Simillien will receive $500.
Incubate Debate founder James Fishback commended Jasmine: “What really stuck out about Jasmine’s essay was not just the role of U.S. Sugar and the sugar industry supporting employment, supporting the economy...but all the other things that it does—from athletics, to scholarships, to health, to well-being. Jasmine really captured [the impact of U.S. Sugar] in a special way.”
On March 15, the community is invited to hear her essay in person, as she’ll take the main stage at the 2024 Sugar Festival!
