People For the American Way blasts DeSantis authoritarian move against prosecutor

Posted

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following reports that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has suspended State Attorney Monique Worrell, the second elected Democratic prosecutor he has removed, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:

“Ron DeSantis loves trying to look tough, especially now that his presidential campaign is tanking. And every time he does, Floridians get hurt. State Attorney Worrell was elected by voters who believed in her commitment to criminal justice reform. She is also the only Black woman local prosecutor in the state of Florida. This is an attack not just on Worrell but on the Floridians who wanted her to bring a new perspective to the criminal justice system – as was DeSantis’s firing of Andrew Warren last year. Ron DeSantis can run, but he can’t hide, from Floridians and Americans who don’t want his authoritarian approach to government in their lives.”
