WEST PALM BEACH — Summer is here! That means longer days, shorter nights and plenty of sunshine to enjoy the natural beauty of Central and South Florida. June 21 is the Summer Solstice, marking the official start of the summer season and the longest day of the year in terms of sunlight.

The South Florida Water Management District offers many ways for you to enjoy the sunshine this season and explore the natural beauty of Central and South Florida.

Did you know the SFWMD is the steward for more than 1 million acres of public lands? Each year, the SFWMD takes steps to enhance and expand the recreational use of properties throughout our 16-county region. From camping to bird-watching to hiking and more, you will find plenty of ways to enjoy the long summer days and soak in the extra sunshine. Activities include:

• Camping: SFWMD has campgrounds throughout the region that accommodate tents, RVs, groups, equestrians and more. Each campsite offers unique views of South Florida’s diverse ecosystem.

• Hiking: SFWMD lands offer many miles of hiking trails for you to explore. Enjoy the longest days of the year and reconnect with nature along picturesque trails.

• Canoeing/Kayaking: Grab a paddle and explore South Florida’s natural areas by water. SFWMD lands offer many opportunities for canoeing and kayaking.

• Wildlife Viewing: Alligators, birds, deer, and turtles are just some of the native wildlife you may see while visiting SFWMD’s public lands. Remember to watch for signage about wildlife and keep a safe distance.

• Stargazing: The dark skies over SFWMD’s public lands offer some of the best opportunities to see the stars far, far away from the city lights.
