A full road closure on US 27 in Glades County is in effect through Thursday, Nov. 2, due to a train derailment resulting from a crash with a semi-tractor trailer. The crash happened on Monday, October 30, at a railroad crossing on US 27 at Boar Hammock Ranch. The train was carrying molasses.

Railroad crews continue working to extract the rail cars and rebuild the damaged tracks. The tracks are owned and operated by South Central Florida Express/US Sugar. Large cranes are being used to help expedite the process. The Glades County Sheriff’s Office remains on the scene to assist with traffic. The posted detours are as follows:

North-bound Detour Route (Approximately 25 miles)

  • From US 27 to SR 78 to SR 29 and back to US 27

South-bound Detour Route (Approximately 25 miles)

  • From US 27 to SR 29 to SR 78 and back to US 27

Expect delays along the detour route and use caution driving in the area.

The railroad company will coordinate with FDOT and the Glades County Sheriff’s Office on when some and all lanes will reopen.
